Toyota Tacoma (2016) Breaks Cover ahead of Detroit Auto Show

When the curtain drops at the Toyota stand at the 2015 Detroit auto show, Toyota intends to spoil all the fun General Motors has been enjoying in the midsize truck arena. To take on the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, the 2016 Toyota Tacoma will arrive with fully overhauled styling that gives the pickup a fresher and more modern appeal.
Toyota previously teased both the grille and rear liftgate of the 2016 Toyota Tacoma, which represent the biggest changes from the outgoing midsize pickup. Up front, the Toyota’s old trapezoid-shaped grille expands into a larger hexagon shape with black paint and chrome outlining. Chrome trim around the grille and foglamps adds a stylish flavor to the look of this Double Cab 2016 Toyota Tacoma Limited, which is equipped with a V-6 engine and four-wheel drive.
As before, we expect that new Tacomas equipped for more off-road use will feature their own trim-specific materials and detailing. The Tacoma’s new headlights are also sharper and more elongated than before, leading neatly into the body-colored wheel arches. The 2016 Toyota Tacoma Limited does have a front air dam for added fuel economy, but the good news for off-road junkies is that it is attached with a simple set of bolts. The air dam can be easily removed so it won’t be crushed during your first rock-crawl or hill climb. Even with the air dam still attached though, the Tacoma’s approach angle looks to be better than that of the Colorado/Canyon twins, which don’t provide much ground clearance up front.

Around the rear we see that the Tacoma-stamped rear liftgate is joined by slightly revised taillights and a redesigned rear bumper. We also noticed a backup camera incorporated into the liftgate handle, although we don’t know yet whether this will be available as standard equipment or as an option.
Full specs and platform details on the 2016 Toyota Tacoma won’t be available until closer to the truck’s launch at the Detroit auto show next week, but there have been rumors about the midsize truck’s underpinnings floating around for months. Based on photos from hot-weather testing we saw last year, we don’t anticipate a huge change to the Tacoma’s well-established platform, but many have speculated that the truck will receive six-speed automatic and manual transmissions for all models, replacing the old four- and five-speed automatics. There will almost certainly be a four-cylinder alternative to the V-6 engine, but we still don’t know if these engines are carry-overs of the 2.7-liter inline-four and the 4.0-liter V-6, or perhaps more fuel-efficient powerplants.

Based on our own earlier spy shots of the 2016 Toyota Tacoma, we do expect that Toyota will continue to offer an Access Cab model, despite rumors to the contrary.
