It is the things dreams and sore necks are made of — if you are sober enough to see it.
Locals and tourists pack like sardines into the city's vantage points, forgetting the hell of the year before, to cheers a stranger and watch a vomiting middle-aged woman who popped the champagne cork a little too early.
So if you didn't learn your lesson last year, the bright lights have blinded you again and the bubbly is already kicking in, here's a reality check for Sydney New Year's Eve. If you are stuck at home hanging with your mother, this should also make you feel better about life in general.
Camp out for days to get the best spot
Australians love a line, and this is a queue like no other. If you aren't on the foreshore already, you may as well stay home, you've got no chance of getting close at this late hour. This guy has the best spot in the house. If you're not camping, find yourself a boat. Or a billionaire friend
There you are, feeling all smug that you got the best spot on the harbour, then mister billionaire pulls up. Right in front of you. Happy New Year, pleb.Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's yacht takes prime spot on Sydney Harbour for New Year's Eve http://t.co/i7X6XRzZ4w pic.twitter.com/Joeqwxk1id

Remain sober for 14 hours
The other great thing about partying on the harbour is alcohol is prohibited everywhere with a decent view. On top of that, bottle shops across the state close at 10 p.m. due to new laws introduced in 2014. No New Year's cheers for you. Accept the fact you won't be getting home until 10 a.m.
A 20 km walk home is always a pleasant way to ring in the New Year and kick off your "do more exercise" New Year resolution extra early. Transport in Sydney can be a nightmare at the best of times, but with a crowd of this size, the infrastructure hits a breaking point. The Harbour Bridge is shut, Circular Quay train station is shut, the Cahill Express Way is shut, so many roads are shut. But you'll be great. You can always take an Uber, after remortgaging your home.
People are urged to stick to public transport. Here's a little reminder about how easily that works:

You can get in, but you can't get out
Another easy-fix option is to leave just before the fireworks start, at 11:30 p.m. You'll be going against the traffic, you've probably had enough to drink (if you managed to smuggle a hip flask in) and the fireworks will no doubt look the same as last year. Then they'll leave before it starts to beat the traffic. Your best bet is to take a sleeping bag and stay for the week
Okay, so you really want to see the main event? Make it a week-long celebration by sleeping on the side of a footpath.#SydNYE people queuing since 5pm Monday to watch the fireworks #SydneyNYE @ABCNews24 @BreakfastNews pic.twitter.com/xk3prkdkYB

The fireworks better be worth the wait...
If not, move to Melbourne next year, where there is free public transport and a crowd of only 500,000. Bliss.Image: NIKKI SHORT / EPA/Associated Press

Don't worry, there is always New Year's Day...
If you fell asleep on your neighbour's lawn at 8 p.m. and didn't make it near the fireworks, enjoy the hangover-free New Year's Day. This is when Sydney really starts to party....and the beach
